Abstract : Sri Lankan economy is traditionally dominated by agriculture. The main food crops cultivated in Sri Lanka can be broadly categorized as perishables and non-perishables. The former include fruits and vegetables and the latter consists of grains, field crops and spice crops. Due to use of inadequate and poor post production techniques serious quantitative and qualitative losses occur in these crops. The post harvest losses range between 10-20% for durables and 30-40% for perishables. There is a great need to adopt and develop simple technologies for loss prevention and value addition at catchments level.
