India is bestowed with a wide range of climatic conditions which is most suitable for cultivation of horticultural crops such as fruits, vegetables, flowers etc. The production of horticultural crops has been increased by 30 per cent in last five years. The continuous raise in the production of horticultural crops placed India 2nd most horticultural crop producing country after China. The contribution of India in the world area and production of fruits was 12.2 % and 12.6 % during 2012-13.
Contribution of Different Countries in World Fruit Production
India rank second among world fruit producing countries despite its lower productivity (11.6) (Table 1). Fruit productivity of India is about half of the productivity of USA (23.3) and Indonesia (22.3), but slightly better than the world average (11.3) and equals that of China (11.6) during 2012-13.

During 2009-10, mango covered 4946.31 thousand hectare area with a total production of 37124.74 thousand MT and productivity of 7.51 MT/ha. India placed top position among mango producing countries of the world and contributed 40.48% of the total world mango production during 2009-10. China with a total production of 4351.29 thousand MT and Thailand with a total production of 2550.6 thousand MT stood at second and third position among mango producing countries, respectively. The other major mango producing countries in the world during 2009-10 were Pakistan (1845.5 thousand MT), Mexico (1632.65 thousand MT), Indonesia (1287.29 thousand MT) and Brazil 1188.91 (thousand MT).
