Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of angiopspermic plants.

Abstract : The extracts of eight medicinal plants prepared in 80% methanol and cold water were tested for their antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria and fungi. All extracts were analyzed for the detection of secondary metabolites. Some extracts revealed presence of flavonoids, indole alkaloids, reducing sugar, cardiac glycosides, saponins, steroids, tannins and terpenoides. These metabolites were detected mostly in methanol extracts of plants. Among all the plant extracts, methanol extract of Prospopis juliflora leaves showed significant antimicrobial activity against target organisms. Methanol extracts revealed greater antimicrobial activity as compared to aqueous extracts. All extracts were separated into different compounds on TLC. Toluene/ethyl acetate (1:1) solvent exhibited best bands separation of methanol extracts. There were 50 bands were appeared on TLC plate in all methanol extracts. Whereas only four bands exhibited in aqueous extracts in the same solvent system. The highest number of bands was found to be in methanol extracts of Solanum nigrum and Mangifera indica (six each). Bioautography was carried out to determine the antimicrobial activity of unknown compound from methanol extracts. Non of the band or compound showed zone of inhibition against Aspergillus niger individually on TLC plate. The antimicrobial activity revealed by these plants could be attributed to the synergetic effect of two or more detected compounds.
