Taxis responses of oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) to the odors of two types of mango.

Abstract : The taxis responses of oriental fruit fly, B. dorsalis, to the odours of ripe and unripe fruits of mango cultivars Martssu and Sannian were examined. The adults tested preferred the ripe fruits of the 2 cultivars. The fruit fly preferred the ripe fruit of Martssu (P0.01). Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis of volatile compounds from the two stages and two cultivars of mango revealed that the levels of eight volatile compounds (2-butyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, 1-Octanol, 2-butenoic acid ethyl ester, butyl acetate, ?-pinene, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, and ?-caryophyllene) increased two times on average in the ripe fruits of the two cultivars. The eight volatile compounds were the possible reasons for the fruit fly preference to the ripe mango. The contents of each alcohol, each ester and ?-pinene, ?-pinene and 3-hydroxy-2-butanone increased in ripe fruit of Martssu; these compounds perhaps played an important role in the oriental fruit fly preference for Martssu ripe fruit.
