Abstract : Cuttings of mango from young Dashehari seedlings, and of guava, cv. Allahabad Safeda, from a stoolbed were dipped in IBA at 0 or 5000 p.p.m. for 15 s, and then dipped in one of several phenolic compounds at 0 or 2000 p.p.m. for 15 s. In mangoes, treatment with IBA alone raised the rooting percentage from 31 to 93%, and 100% rooting was obtained when IBA treatment was followed by dipping in rutin, o-coumaric acid, quercetin, umbelliferone or syringic acid. In guavas the rooting percentage was increased from 6% to 87% by IBA alone, and to 100% by further treatment with rutin, quercetin or umbelliferone. With both species, root numbers/cutting were correspondingly enhanced. Dipping in the phenolic compounds alone had little or no effect on rooting.
