Investigation of the fruit drop process of Tainong 1 mango cultivar and fruit thinning on the fruit quality.

Abstract : An investigation was conducted in an orchard of mango cv. Tainong 1. On 13 April, at the end of flowering, sheeting was laid under the trees and the number of fruitlets dropping was counted at 3-day intervals until 23 May. Tainong 1 had 2 fruit drop peaks, one on 10 April, 6-9 days after flower fall, and one 18-33 days after flowering. Fruit thinning was conducted on 2 May. Fruit thinning increased the number of fruits containing embryos (up by 19.6%); these fruits were much larger, weighing 228 g (compared with only 196.0 g for the controls). The production of the thinned trees was reduced only by 0.2 kg/tree.
