Oviposition preference of oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis.

Abstract : The Oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis, a polyphagous pest invaded South Jiangsu, China, in recent years, and seriously destroyed different species of fruits and vegetables. A paper cup experiment was conducted to determine the effects of hosts and fruit colour and shape on the oviposition preference of Oriental fruit fly. The oviposition preference of Bactrocera dorsalis to different fruit hosts from high to low was orange, banana, mango, jujube, pomegranate, apple, peach, plum, grape and persimmon, and the preference to vegetable hosts from high to low was towel gourd, cowpea, balsam pear, cucumber, brinjal, pumpkin, green pepper and tomato. Female adults preferred the orange and green colours and rounded fruits to black and quadrate ones. The odour, colour and shape of host fruits significantly affected Bactrocera dorsalis oviposition preference.
