Abstract : Since 2000, a European fair trade company has been trying to link small-scale mango farmers in Burkina Faso with clients in Europe. This paper considers this fair trade initiative as a story of trial-and-error, and success. Sections briefly discuss: the profile of traditional mango growing in Burkina Faso; contractors and the mango trade chain; the setting up of a local institution (a commercial export company, following the failure of a cooperative) to meet supply needs; and why not all is fair in Fairtrade.
