Abstract : In an experiment conducted in Vejalpur, Gujarat, India, during 2003-06, rootstocks of mango cv. Kesar were transplanted in the field in August 2003. Softwood grafting on these rootstocks was conducted on the first week of August 2004. The treatments consisted of plants in which leaves were retained (LR), plants in which leaves in the lower half were removed (LHR), and plants in which all leaves were removed (LAR). Plant survival was 93.33 and 100.00 under LHR and LR, respectively, but was only 76.66% under LAR. Plants under LHR and LR also showed greater increases in average circumference and secondary growth than those under LAR.
