Prediction of water requirement for horticultural crops using open pan evaporation method.

Abstract : The amount of water to be applied for horticultural crops under drip irrigation was predicted on climatological approach. After analyzing the climatic data, the maximum month wise water requirement for full grown orange, lemon, guava, sapota, mango and pomegranate were 196, 211, 136, 229, 467 and 117 litre day-1 plant-1 respectively. The variation in the water demand for different horticultural crops was found in between 23-28 per cent, while in case of pomegranate the variation of 23-31 per cent was predicted. The peak water requirement for orange, guava, sapota and pomegranate is due to high evaporation rate while in case lemon; canopy spread plays an important role in peak water requirement. However, mango water requirement mainly depends upon the gross area allotted to plant. The values of peak amount of water can be utilized for irrigation pump design.
