Assessment of local mango (Mangifera indica L.) seedling types for pickling characters.

Abstract : Forty-two genotypes of seedling-derived mango (20 years old), planted in Rahuri, Maharashtra, India, were evaluated for pickling characters. Results revealed the occurrence of wide variability in flowering time, maturity time and yield. Considerable variability was also evident for different fruit characters, i.e. skin colour, skin chlorophyll content, surface smoothness, skin thickness, fruit weight, length, breadth and thickness, pulp weight and pulp percentage, stone weight and percentage, stone filling, TSS, acidity sugar, starch, vitamin C and fibre content. Based on these characters, 5 genotypes were considered as promising, i.e. Genotype No. 17, 20, 32, 35 and 57. Of these, Genotype No. 35 was the most promising.
