Response of mango (Mangifera indica) genotypes to graded levels of salt stress.

Abstract : Seedlings of 4 polyembryonic mango (M. indica) genotypes (Kurukkan, Olour, Kerala 1 and Kerala 2) were grown in 30-cm earthen pots lined with 1:2 polythene under polythene tent. Different soil EC1:2 levels (0.30 dS/m (control) to 6.32 dS/m) were maintained through the application of NaCl:Na2CO3:K2SO4 in a 2:1:1 ratio. Genotypes Kurukkan and Olour were more salt tolerant than genotypes Kerala 1 and Kerala 2. Both Kurukkan and Olour survived 4.23 dS/m salinity, whereas Kerala 1 and Kerala 2 did survive beyond 1.29 dS/m salinity. Growth rate decreased in all genotypes as salinity increased, with Kerala 1 and Kerala 2 being severely affected. There were significant differences (P0.05) in chlorophyll content at different salinity levels. Chlorophyll a, b and total chlorophyll contents decreased sharply in all genotypes with increasing soil salinity.
