Abstract : Panicle emergence began in mid-January and continued until March; panicle growth was completed in 5 weeks and maximum growth occurred in weeks 2-3 after emergence; the highest percentage of hermaphrodite flowers occurred in the upper part of the panicles; panicle thinning increased the percentage of hermaphrodite flowers; maximum anthesis occurred between 02.00 and 0.400 h and maximum anther dehiscence between 08.00 and 12.00 h; the stigma was most receptive on the day of anthesis. Pollen germination in vitro was highest in 25% sucrose at 28-30 deg C and on 25% sucrose agar (0.5%). Premature fruit drop occurred at the pea stage.
