Metroglyph analysis in pickle purpose mangoes (Mangifera indica L.) of Jharkhand.

Abstract : Metroglyph analysis was used to evaluate in 1997-99 the fruit characteristics (fruit length, diameter, volume and weight; pericarp weight; stone weight; and specific gravity at full maturity) of 19 mango genotypes grown in Jharkhand, India, mainly for pickle production. The scatter diagram could be distinguished into 5 complexes. Complex I and II had 3 entries each, whereas complex III had 4 entries. Complex V had 8 entries, whereas complex IV had only one entry. Complex I (BMP-12, BMP-16 and BMP-17) entries had moderate to high index values for fruit length, fruit volume, stone weight and specific gravity, and high index values for fruit diameter, fruit weight and pericarp weight. Complex II (BMP-2, BMP-4 and BMP-14) had low to moderate index values for fruit length, stone weight and specific gravity, and moderate index values for fruit diameter, fruit volume, fruit weight and pericarp weight. Complex IV (BMP-11) had moderate index values for fruit length, fruit volume, fruit weight and specific gravity; high index values for fruit diameter and stone weight; and low index value for pericarp weight. The entries of these clusters may be used for future breeding of mango for pickle production.
