Abstract : Qualitative and quantitative analyses of fruit sugars were made for 25 cvs and 13 cvs of several temperate and sub-tropical species, and tropical species, respectively. Cherry, apricot, plum, nectarine and peach all contained glucose as the main component, fructose, sucrose and sorbitol (the last only a trace in peach). Cherry, plum and nectarine also contained inositol. Blueberry (Vaccinium ashei), fig and grape contained only glucose, fructose and sucrose, glucose being the main sugar in blueberry and grape and fructose in fig. Pear, apple and loquat contained fructose (as the main sugar), glucose, sorbitol and sucrose; pear also contained inositol. Persimmon contained glucose (main), fructose and sucrose. Citrus fruits (grapefruit, orange, Citrus poonensis and satsuma) contained glucose (main), sucrose, fructose and inositol. Banana, pawpaw, mango, mangosteen, durian, litchi, longan, rambutan, cherimoya, pineapple, feijoa and Chinese gooseberry contained glucose, fructose and sucrose. Mango and Chinese gooseberry also contained inositol. The main sugar in mango and pineapple was sucrose, that in the other fruits was glucose.
