Effect of pruning on production of new shoots, subsequent growth and flowering of mango cv. Baneshan.

Abstract : A field experiment was conducted during 2000/01 in Rajendranagar, Andhra Pradesh, India, on 8-year-old mango cv. Baneshan trees to determine the effect of pruning shoots (890 in total) 10 cm back from the tips in mid-July,on the production of new shoots, subsequent growth, and flowering. The highest number of shoots produced 2 laterals (261) followed by 3 laterals (230), but up to 6 laterals were produced by some shoots. The laterals showed 1-4 growth flushes. The number of laterals directly influenced the diameter and length of the consecutive flushes. The diameter of the shoots and the length of the flushes increased as the number of laterals decreased. The percentage of shoots flowering was highest for those producing 3 and 4 lateral shoots (91 and 93%, respectively). The shoots with 1 and 2 flushes were induced to flower more (99.5 and 97.03%, respectively) than those having 3 or 4 flushes (63.2 and 14.6%, respectively). The occurrence of the laterals after pruning was negatively correlated with flush production and the percentage of flowering shoots. The total number of shoots with 1 flush and 2 flushes were positively related to the percentage of flowering in 4 flush shoots.
