Field evaluation of insecticides for the control of twig miner on mango.

Abstract : A trial was carried out in a 'Sensation' mango orchard in Nelspruit, South Africa to evaluate the efficacy of different insecticides against the twig miner Spulerina sp. The trees were planted in 1990 at a spacing of 3×7 m. The treatments were: untreated control; methomyl (Lannate) 200 g/l SL at 20 g/100 l water + medium narrow range mineral oil (Sunspray 7E) 988 g/l at 500 ml/100 l water; abamectin (Agrimec) 18 g/l EC at 25 ml/100 l water + Sunspray 7E 988 g/l at 300 ml/100 l water; monocrotophos (Azodrin) 400 g/l SL at 50 ml/100 l water; fenthion (Lebaycid) 500 g/l EC at 100 ml/100 l water; prothiofos (Tokuthion) 960 g/l EC at 100 ml/100 l water; cartap hydrochloride (Suntab) 500 g/kg SP at 200 or 400 g/100 l water + Silwet at 50 ml/100 l water; and cyromazine (Patron) 750 g/kg WP at 25 g/100 l water. Treatments were applied as soon as damage was observed, which occurred on green twigs from March to August. Azodrin, Agrimec and Suntab controlled the twig miner effectively. One application would probably be adequate. Application of the treatment at the right time will reduce the pest population drastically.
