Occurrence of Dichocrocis punctiferalis Guen. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) on mango in Western U.P.

Abstract : In June 2001, reddish brown larvae of Dichocrocis punctiferalis [Conogethes punctiferalis] were observed feeding on unripe mango fruits in Sambhalhera village of Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, India. The adult D. punctiferalis has a medium size, brownish yellow colour, and a number of dark spots on its wings. On hatching, the larva bores into the unriped mango fruit near the stalk end and feeds within. Black frass is found near the place of entrance. The attacked fruits start rotting and finally drop from the tree and those left on the tree lose their market value. The full-grown larva is stout, reddish brown in colour with numerous short tubercles on its body and measures ~25-30 mm in length. Pupation takes place inside the fruits in white silken cocoon. This is thought to be the first record of D. punctiferalis infestation on mango fruits.
