Postharvest quality of mango grown under water stress and potassium nitrate induction.

Abstract : The effects of water stress levels (100, 90, 80 and 70% of the irrigation water applied regularly at the farm) and number of potassium nitrate applications (from 1 to 4) on the postharvest quality of mango cv. Tommy Atkins were investigated in experiments conducted at Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Fruits were harvested in November 2000. In the laboratory, the fruits were analysed immediately after harvest and after 30 days of storage at refrigerated conditions of 12±1°C and 90±5% relative humidity (RH). In the last 2 days of storage, the fruits were transferred into conditions with 24±2°C and 60±5% RH, after which data were recorded for pulp firmness as well as soluble solids and starch contents. The number of potassium nitrate applications had no significant effect on the postharvest quality of mango fruits.
