Effect of temperature and humidity on success of stone grafting of mango varieties in the new alluvial zone of West Bengal.

Abstract : In experiments conducted during 1995 and 1996 in the new alluvial zone of West Bengal, India, 18-year-old mango plants of uniform growth and vigour belonging to the cultivars Amrapali, Himsagar and Fazli were used as scion and grafted onto 6-day-old rootstocks taken from locally adopted mango seedlings. Grafting was performed during June, July and August following the splice method of stone grafting (slanting cut) with prior defoliation of the scion. Data for temperature and relative humidity were recorded at 7 days before and at 5, 10, 15 and 20 days after grafting. The average minimum and maximum temperatures during pre- and post-grafting periods were negatively correlated with the grafting success of Fazli and Himsagar. Amrapali preferred slightly higher maximum temperature during the initial stages. All three cultivars showed significant positive correlations between maximum temperature and days required for the sprouting of scion shoots. Relative humidity was positively correlated with grafting success in all cultivars. In general, the meteorological conditions in July were suitable for the stone grafting of mango in the new alluvial zone of West Bengal.
