Success in stone grafting of mango as influenced by the defoliation of scion and age of root stocks & scion shoots.

Abstract : An experiment was conducted during the monsoon season (July-September) 1998, at Bhagalpur, Bihar, India, to evaluate the effects of defoliation period (0, 6 and 12 days prior to grafting), age of scion (2 and 4 months old) and age of rootstock (6, 12 and 18 days old) on the success of stone grafting in 'Dasherhari' mango. Defoliation at 6 days prior to grafting required the shortest time for sprouting (15.17 days) and recorded the highest values for length of scion after 6 months (10.88 cm), diameter of scion after 6 months (0.52 cm), number of leaves per graft (17.78), total leaf area (167.24 cm2), graft survival (66,45%) and grafting success (76.65%). Four-month-old scions and 6-day-old rootstocks, respectively, required the shortest time for sprouting (16.04 and 12.89 days) and recorded the highest values for length of scion after 6 months (11.25 and 10.69 cm), diameter of scion after 6 months (0.53 and 0.50 cm), number of leaves per graft (17.89 and 16.33), total leaf area (174.96 and 156.19 cm2), graft survival (70.00 and 60.78%) and grafting success (79.11 and 77.25%).
