Effect of scion cultivars, dates of grafting and levels of antitranspirant on success and survival stone grafting of mango (Mangifera indica L.).

Abstract : An experiment was conducted in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India during 1994-95 and 1995-96 to determine the most appropriate period of stone grafting in mango and to evaluate the use of polyethylene tube as an antitranspirant during the process. Four- to five-month old preactivated shoots of Amrapali, Mallika and Dashahari cultivars were grafted onto 10-day-old seedling rootstocks by wedge method on 1, 16 and 31 August. The scions of stone-grafted plants were either covered or uncovered with polyethylene tubes (3 cm × 15 cm). The greatest sprouting of scion (76.33%) and subsequent survival (40.22%) of stone-grafted plants were recorded for Amrapali and grafting on 16 August (70.78% sprouting and 42.77% survival). The use of polyethylene tube as an antitranspirant significantly increased the sprouting (65.03 and 70.52%) and survival (38.37 and 43.7%) rate of stone-grafted plants, as well as the survival percentage of sprouted plants 6 months after grafting (59.06 and 62.075%), in 1994-95 and 1995-96, respectively.
