High density planting and planting system in mango (Mangifera indica L.).

Abstract : Grafts of mango cv. Neelum were planted in 5 planting systems with varied planting density with a uniform plot size of 30×30, during October 1994, in Periyakulam, Tamil Nadu, India. The planting systems consisted of square (9 plants), hedge row (15 plants), double hedge row (20 plants), paired row (12 plants) and cluster with 16 plants. The following spacing was adopted: 10×10 m (204 plants/ha) for square system, 5×10 m (340 plants/ha) for hedge row system, 5×5 m in one hedge row and 10 m between 2 hedges (453 plants/ha) for double hedge system, 5×10 m in one of the pairs and 10 m between the pairs (272 plants/ha) for paired row planting, 5×5 m in one of the 4 clusters and 10 m between each cluster (365 plants/ha) for cluster planting. Data on growth parameters like tree height, number of branches and tree spread revealed no significant differences on the 5th year (September 1999). However, there were significant differences in the fruit yield (number of fruits and fruit yield per plot). The highest mean plot yield of 54.2 kg (255.7 fruits) was recorded in double hedge row, followed by cluster planting with a mean fruit yield of 36.0 kg/plot (183.4 fruits). During August 2000, the same trend was observed with a mean fruit yield of 70.6 kg/plot (332.6 fruits) in double hedge row system, followed by a mean yield of 49.0 kg (234.4 fruits) in cluster planting.
