Storage behaviour of mango (Mangifera indica) hybrids.

Abstract : The quality of fruits obtained from 10 mango cultivars, Probhashankar, Mahmood Bahar, Amrapali, Mallika, Ratna, A.U. Rumani, Swarn Jehangir, Neeluddin, Neeleshan, Neelgoa and Langra (control), was evaluated during storage at ambient temperature under Sabour (Bihar, India) conditions during 1998. The physico-chemical properties of the fruits were recorded at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 days after fruit harvest. Of the different cultivars, Mallika recorded the lowest values for physiological weight loss (31.30%) and storage loss (12.00%) at 15 days after harvest, and a storage life of 15 days. In contrast, Mahmood Bahar and Amrapali recorded the highest values for physiological weight loss (44.00%) and storage loss at 15 days after harvest (45.00%), respectively. The low rate of respiration and less incidence of pathogens (e.g. Aspergillus, Botryodiplodia and Diplodia) contributed to the longer shelf-life of Mallika compared with the other cultivars. Mallika also recorded the highest values for total soluble solids (22.00°Brix) and total sugar content (15.99%) at 15 days after harvest. Mallika exhibited low titratable acidity (0.07%) and moderate level of ascorbic acid content (15.90 mg/100 g pulp).
