Evaluation of local strains of mango (Mangifera indica) grown in West Bengal.

Abstract : Twenty mango cultivars were sampled during 1995-97 to evaluate the quality of fruits from trees growing in West Bengal, India. Four typical fruits of each cultivar were sampled randomly at maturity and analysed for the different physico-chemical properties. Significant variations among cultivars were observed in all parameters studied. 'Suraya Pasand' recorded the highest average fruit weight (372.50 g), as well as the highest fruit diameter (length=12.27 cm and breadth=8.30 cm). The highest pulp and peel weights were recorded for 'Suraya Pasand' (304.75 g) and 'Talabi' (56.25 g), respectively. A high pulp : stone ratio was observed in 'Rugni', 'Sheeradar', and 'Suraya Pasand', indicating the suitability of these cultivars for fruit processing. On the other hand, a high peel weight : fruit weight ratio was observed in 'Sabsang', 'Shah Pasand', 'Sita Bhog', 'Subza', 'Talabi' and 'Tephala', indicating the potential of these cultivars to withstand transportation damages. The maximum values for total soluble solids (20.46°Brix), total sugar (15.39%), and ascorbic acid content (44.33 mg/100 g pulp) were recorded for 'Rani', 'Safdar Pasand' and 'Shah Pasand', respectively. High total soluble solids : acid ratios (>100) were recorded for 'Rugni', 'Safdar Pasand', 'Saradamani Bhog', 'Sita Bhog' and 'Totapuri Red Small', indicating the relative sweetness of these cultivars compared with the other cultivars.
