Individual packaging of mangos cv. Tommy Atkins in plastic film: effect on shelf life.

Abstract : Mangoes cv. Tommy Atkins at mature green colour stage were packed in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film to determine the effects of packaging using plastic film on the shelf life of mangoes. During storage, sensory evaluation was carried out using an unstructured hedonic scale for overall acceptance of appearance and flavour. Packed mangoes recorded higher shelf life (21 days) compared to the control (6 days) and 3.5-fold lower weight loss rates than the control. No differences in ascorbic acid degradation were observed. Packaging and storage at 12°C was effective in extending the shelf life of mangoes by reducing metabolic activity and decay.
