Root distribution of mango under trickle irrigation in a coast plain sand soil.

Abstract : Longitudinal and orthogonal trenches were dug from the trunk of mango trees, and root samples were collected using the monolith method to evaluate the root distribution under trickle irrigation (drip and microsprinkle). Root samples were scanned, digitized, and the root length and diameter were determined using the Rootedge software. Symmetry in root patterns was not observed under both irrigation systems. Higher root activity was expected under drip irrigation. Results emphasized fertigation as the most suitable means of fertilizer application of mango under trickle irrigation. The most adequate zone for soil water sensor placement in the soil profile around the trunk was determined.
