Evaluation of mango rootstocks for yield efficiency of 'Parvin' and 'Tommy Atkins' varieties.

Abstract : A study was conducted at the Fortuna Agricultural Experimental Substation, Puerto Rico, to determine the effects of rootstock-graft combination on tree size, yield, and yield efficiency of the commercial mango (Mangifera indica) cv. Parvin and Tommy Atkins. These varieties were grafted on Julie, Cubano, Malda, Eldon, and a control, Colombo Kidney. Data on number and weight of harvested fruits were collected for four years from 1995, eight years after being planted in the orchard, through 1998. Compared to the control, Eldon was a dwarfing rootstock for both Parvin and Tommy Atkins varieties, and Malda reduced the tree size of Tommy Atkins. Cubano and Julie rootstocks gave taller trees of both varieties. Dwarfing combinations gave lower yields compared to the control, Cubano and Julie rootstocks, but relating the yield to the tree size, all of the rootstocks had equal yield efficiency. Trees of cv. Parvin were taller, gave higher yields, and had better yield efficiency than Tommy Atkins. It is concluded that within the group, Eldon is the best rootstock for Parvin, and Malda and Eldon are equally good for Tommy Atkins and better compared to the control, Cubano and Eldon rootstocks.
