Anomalies in microsporogenesis in malformed mango flowers.

Abstract : Young flower buds of mango cv. Ratna collected between 9 to 11 in the morning from malformed panicles were fixed in carnoy solution (ethanol-chloroform-acetic acid, 6:3:1) and stored in 70% alcohol. Various types of meiotic anomalies were observed. Two to 4 chromosomes were observed lying away from the metaphase plate. Malformation bridges and laggards, and gradual reduction in chromosome number were observed during the anaphase and telophase. During telophase, chromosomes and organelles, i.e. cell walls, degenerated. Spindle anomalies were frequently noted at second meiotic division showing 3 separate parallel spindles. Cytoplasm within the pollen mother cells was divided by cell plate formation leading to polyad formation and resulting to abortive pollens.
