Effect of varieties, nutrients and direction on the incidence of floral and vegetative malformation in grafted mango.

Abstract : Twenty-eight mango trees (cv. Langra) were sprayed with 7 treatments (Multiplex [trace elements]; Multiplex + urea; Multiplex + ZnSO4; Multiplex + urea + ZnSO4; urea alone; Rogor [dimethoate] + urea + Multiplex; application rates were 3 ml, 4%, 0.08% and 2 ml/litre for Multiplex, urea, ZnSO4 and Rogor, respectively) of nutrients and insecticides during inflorescence initiation in a field experiment conducted in Imalia, India [date not given]. Vegetative and floral malformations were recorded in April and May. In a related experiment, 7 mango cultivars (Langra, Dashehri, Chausa, Sunderja, Malda, Fazali and Hemsagar) were observed for incidence of mango malformation. In both experiments, the incidence of malformation was recorded for the different sides (North-, South-, East-, and West-facing) of the tree. The incidence of floral malformation was lowest (20%) in trees treated with Rogor + Multiplex + urea and highest (55.37%) in the non-treated trees. Similarly, the incidence of vegetative malformation was lowest (6.5%) in trees treated with Rogor + Multiplex + urea compared with 28.12% in non-treated trees. Hemsagar was the least susceptible with 18.42% floral malformation and 4.67% vegetative malformation. Sunderja was the most susceptible with 50.92 and 21.25% floral and vegetative malformations, respectively. In both experiments, the incidence of floral and vegetative malformations were consistently highest on the North-facing and lowest on the South-facing sides of the trees.
