Sex behavior of different varieties of mango (Mangifera indica L.).

Abstract : A study was conducted with 16 popular mango cultivars of West Bengal, India, to assess sex behaviour. The study showed that the mean length of panicles, irrespective of cultivar, was significantly higher in 1995 than in 1996, but that the reverse was observed for mean breadth. The mean number of total staminate flowers was higher in 1995 than in 1996. Irrespective of cultivar, the percentage of hermaphrodite flowers per panicle in 1996 was significantly higher than that in 1995. Between both years, the sex ratio (staminate:hermaphrodite flowers) was considerably smaller in 1996 than in 1995. Cultivar variations may be attributed to genotype, or to differences in 'on' and 'off' years.
