Growth and uptake of some nutrients of mango seedlings as affected by different rates and sources of sulphur.

Abstract : A pot trial was conducted in 1996 and 1997 to study the effect of different rates and sources of sulfur on the growth and nutrient uptake of mango cv. Hindy Bisinnara seedlings. Treatments comprised: three rates (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 g S/plant) and five sources of sulfur (calcium superphosphate (12% S), ammonium sulfate (24% S), calcium sulfate (18% S), elemental sulfur (100% S), and potassium sulfate (18% S)). Increasing sulfur rates and applying ammonium sulfate as a sulfur source significantly increased the leaf area, plant height, stem thickness, dry weight of plant, leaf total chlorophyll and carbohydrate and plant uptake of nitrogen and sulfur, but reduced the plant uptake of phosphorus, potassium and calcium compared with the other sulfur sources. Supplying Hindy Bisinnara seedlings with 5 g S/plant through ammonium sulfate was beneficial in enhancing plant growth.
