Studies on salt tolerance of Hindy Bissinara mango transplants.

Abstract : Experiments were conducted during 1995 and 1996, in El-Minia Governorate, Egypt, to evaluate the response of 30-month-old Hindy Bissinara mango transplants to irrigation with saline water containing sodium carbonate, sodium chloride or sodium sulfate at 250, 500 or 750 ppm. The results showed that increasing the salinity of irrigation water reduced the leaf area, stem thickness, plant height, number of leaves per plant, root and shoot dry weight, and leaf carbohydrate and chlorophyll contents, but increased the uptake of sodium. Saline water containing sodium carbonate had the most harmful effects, followed by sodium chloride and sodium sulfate. Hindy Bissinara transplants could tolerate saline water containing 250 ppm of sodium sulfate without harmful effects on growth.
