Effects of carbon dioxide treatment on postharvest fruit rot disease control and induction of antifungal compound in "Nam Dokmai" mango fruits.

Abstract : Mango cv. Nam Dokmai fruits from a wholesale market in Thailand were treated with 4 concentrations of carbon dioxide using a flow through system for 48 hours. Mangoes treated with 20% carbon dioxide resulted in the greatest non-diseased area of the remaining peel tissue, followed by those from 10% and 30% carbon dioxide treatments. Carbon dioxide at 50% concentration resulted in severely diseased fruits. Close system treatments resulted in more healthy peel areas than the Flow through system. Extraction of and analysis of antifungal compounds by TLC from mango fruits previously treated with 20% carbon dioxide were conducted. Only two inhibition bands, at Rf 0.06-0.11 and Rf 0.64-0.71, of antifungal compounds were observed. The antifungal compounds obtained from the close system treatments were detected to last longer than those from the flow through system and non-treated fruits. This evidence suggests that postharvest disease control of mango may be improved by carbon dioxide treatment and that some antifungal compounds are induced to combat fruit rot diseases.
