Abstract : Individual and combined effects of summer pruning and paclobutrazol on flowering and vegetative budbreak were studied in 7-year-old Haden mango trees on Criollo rootstock in the central region of Venezuela. Pruning for size control in June 1996 restricted flowering and stimulated vegetative budbreak for periods of 6 and 4 months, respectively. Conversely, paclobutrazol (soil-applied Cultar at 4 ml/m² of canopy) stimulated flowering 3 months after its application and restricted vegetative budbreak for a short period of time. The interaction of pruning × paclobutrazol was significant, and when paclobutrazol was applied after pruning, it reduced the inhibitory effect of pruning on flowering.
