Do fallen leaves indicate gall population on mango tree?

Abstract : Procontarinia matteiana is a very serious potential pest of mango. A field study in Karnataka examined to see whether fallen leaf sampling is an index of gall population on mango tree. In cv. Alphonso, galls on fallen leaves showed no correlation with gall population on shoots for up to 15 weeks. Correlation analysis indicated that there was no relationship between P. matteiana counts on fallen leaves and the galls on the tree at 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th week in cv. Banganappali. However, counts of galls on fallen leaves showed significant positive correlation with gall population on the tree at the 15th week (r = 0.6443; p = 0.1).
