Effect of imidacloprid on mango hoppers, Idioscopus spp. (Homoptera: Cicadellidae).

Abstract : Imidacloprid, a nitroguanidine insecticide, was screened for its efficacy against the mango hoppers Idioscopus nagpurensis and I. niveosparsus. Five experiments were conducted in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, on mango cultivars Totapuri, Alphonso and Banganpalli during 1997 and 1998. The results showed that imidacloprid (Confidor 200 SL) was effective at reducing the hopper population to almost zero at all the doses tested, ranging from 0.2 ml per litre to 1.6 ml per litre. Imidacloprid could give up to 100% control in 24 h and remained effective for up to 3 weeks. Imidacloprid treatment was comparable to the standard monocrotophos at 0.05%. At all doses imidacloprid had no phytotoxic effect nor did it affect pollination. It was clearly shown that a single spray at the lowest dose of 0.2 ml per litre could effectively control the two species of Idioscopus for a period of 21 days.
