Abstract : In a trial at Pompéia, SP, Brazil, mango cv. Oliveira Neto trees on Espada or Coco rootstocks were grown directly in the soil or in concrete cylinders 1.0 m high and 1.00 or 0.50 m in diameter, with or without a base. Tree spacing was 3 × 4 m (as opposed to the standard 10 × 10 m). Trees were planted in 1989 and preliminary results (tree height, canopy diameter and productivity) recorded in 1993. From the results, it was concluded that the use of cylinders or closer spacing has potential for increasing productivity (on a per area basis) as well as making cultural practices like spraying and harvesting easier by reducing tree size.
