Effect of NaCl salinity on growth, leaf gas exchange, and mineral composition of grafted mango rootstocks (var. '13-1' and 'Turpentine').

Abstract : The effect of mango rootstock (13-1 and Turpentine) and NaCl salinity (0 or 30 mM NaCl) on the growth of rootstock combinations was assessed. Cuttings were rooted and then grafted reciprocally to raise 4 graft combinations. Non-grafted cuttings were also tested. CO2 assimilation and transpiration decreased in all graft combinations due to salinity. The highest reduction was found in the combination Turpentine grafted on 13-1 rootstock. This combination also exhibited the highest reduction in shoot growth and the highest leaf Cl contents. It was concluded that 13-1 was not able to protect the salt-sensitive scion Turpentine from the detrimental effects of salinity. Na and Cl contents and K:Na ratio of leaves were scion dependent; 13-1 was better than Turpentine.
