Spanish consumer preferences for mango cultivars: a taste testing analysis.

Abstract : During 1989-92, and later in 1995, a consumer taste testing analysis of mangoes, involving 30-40 people, was conducted in Spain. Each cultivar was tasted when it was just ripe enough for consumption but resisted finger pressure, and when it was softer. The consumers preferred the cultivars Carmen, Irwin, Osteen, Lippens and Keitt, followed by Kent and Zill. Although appreciated for other characteristics, Sensation, Tolbert, Tommy Atkins and Otts were rated low for flavour. Of the preferred cultivars, it is suggested that Irwin (early), Lippens (intermediate), Osteen (late) and Keitt (late) could be successfully grown in the Mediterranean basin. The results of the tests on each cultivar are tabulated.
