Observations on the fruit fly species attacking mango in South Africa.

Abstract : A number of preliminary trails to establish a basis for future studies on the fruit fly species which attack mango in South Africa (the Mediterranean [Ceratitis capitata], Natal [C. rosa] and Marula fruit flies) are described. Methods to determine the relative importance of the three species, and the survival rate of their maggots and eggs in cold storage, as well as techniques to detect sting marks at an early stage, were tested. A number of attractants used for the monitoring of these fruit flies were also tested. Favourable results were obtained when terpinyl acetate was used. A viable laboratory culture of Mediterranean fruit flies was established, and efforts were made to rear the Natal and Marula fruit flies.
