Abstract : Test solutions of 0.001-10.0 p.p.m. maleic hydrazide (MH), 2,3-mercaptopropanol (BAL), ascorbic acid, potassium metabisulfite (KMS), glutathione, hydroxyproline, silver nitrate, 2,4-D, BA and diphenylurea were mixed with 10 p.p.m. mango malformin and the effect of the various chemicals on malformin activity was assayed using a Zea mays root curvature test. MH, BAL, ascorbic acid and glutathione had little or no effect on malformin. Silver nitrate was ineffective at the lower concentrations, but at 1.0 or 10.0 p.p.m. reduced malformin activity by >50%. The other 5 substances all inhibited malformin activity to varying extents. Complete inhibition was obtained with 10.0 p.p.m. 2,4-D. It is suggested that mango malformin action may be ethylene-mediated.
