Abstract : A study using data collected from 1970 to 1991 revealed that both the area and production of fruits in Himachal Pradesh have increased over the 21-year period. The increase in area was greater than that in production, with the exception of apple which had a 5.13% per annum increase in production and a 3.99% per annum increase in area. The instability in area and production of both temperate and subtropical fruits decreased from 1980 to 1991, except for nuts and dry fruits. The annual rate of increase in the number of plants during 1980-91 was positive for apple (14.49% per annum), mango (18.29% per annum) and Litchi (6.01% per annum), but was negative for pear (-10.43% per annum), plum (-17.68% per annum), almond (-4.29% per annum), Hill lemon (-8.74% per annum) and lime (-23.98% per annum). The distribution of peach, walnut, pecan nut, Sangtra [mandarin], Malta [orange] and Kinnow [mandarin] remained unchanged during this period.
