Abstract : The effects of a grass mulch, sod culture (retaining the native vegetation) and clean cultivation around tree bases in Mar.-Apr. were studied in a field experiment in 1988-90. Mulching or sod culture reduced the incidence of spongy tissue within ripe fruits (25 and 24%, respectively) compared with the clean cultivated control (41%). Mulching or sod culture reduced soil temperatures compared with the control.
