Sex expression of cv. Irwin mango flowers affected by temperature, soil water stress and plant bioregulators.

Abstract : The effects of temperature, water stress and plant bioregulators on sexual differentiation of mango cv. Irwin flowers were investigated in an area of Japan with a warm climate. The proportion of perfect flowers differed little between plants grown in a greenhouse at 20 and 30°C. Water stress caused by irrigation at 2-week intervals slightly lowered the proportion of perfect flowers. Sex ratio was affected by plant bioregulators: 50 p.p.m. GA3 applied to undifferentiated panicles decreased the number of perfect flowers, whereas application of 1000 p.p.m. BA when floral organs had differentiated in the panicle increased the number of perfect flowers. These results suggest that gibberellins and cytokinins are involved in the sexual differentiation of mango.
