Characteristics of development and storage of mango seeds.

Abstract : Seeds of mango cv. Xiamao matured 120 days after anthesis (DAA), the percentage germination and seedling FW increasing markedly between 110 and 120 DAA. During this period, the bound water and soluble protein content of the seeds increased. No cell division of the radicle was observed during development, indicating that the germination period was not completed on the mother plant. Seeds continued to germinate without supplementary water after removal from their endocarps. Vivipary was observed in the seeds of cv. Autumn mango. Sensitivity to desiccation decreased after the seeds were treated with ABA. Mango seed recalcitrance may therefore be due to germination of mature seeds on the mother plant.
