Effect of inter-crops on growth, yield and quality of Dashehari mango (Mangifera indica L).

Abstract : Mango trees planted in 1979 were intercropped with (1) wheat (Nov.-Apr.) and cowpeas [Vigna unguiculata subsp. unguiculata] (June-Sep.), (2) peas (Oct.-Mar.) and sorghum (June-Sep.), (3) turmeric [Curcuma longa] (Apr.-Dec.) and radishes (Jan.-Mar.), (4) guavas (all year), (5) pawpaws (all year) or (6) no intercrop (clean cultivation). Results are presented for 4 successive seasons (1982-83 to 1985-86). Tree height and spread did not differ significantly between treatments. Treatments 3 and 5 gave significantly higher yields (up to almost 30 kg[/tree] in the later years of the trial) than other treatments. Average fruit volume, length and width values were highest in treatment 3.
