Abstract : Cycloheximide (0.25 and 0.5 g/litre), dinoseb (0.5 and 1.0 ml/litre) and PCP (pentachlorophenol, 5.0 and 7.5 g/litre) were compared for their ability to destroy apical panicles of mango cv. Haden in order to induce axillary panicle development. Ten days were required for panicles to wither and it was a further 2 weeks before the axillary buds reached 0.5 cm in length. The initiation period increased with the length of panicle. Axillary panicles were induced with a success rate of about 50% over all the treatments. The lower concentrations of each of the chemicals were recommended for use. The side-effects of the treatments and methods to reduce the severity of injury are discussed.
