Increased fruit set and retention in mango with exogenous application of polyamines.

Abstract : The panicles of the self-incompatible mango cultivars, Langra and Dusheri, were sprayed prior to anthesis or at full bloom with aqueous solutions of putrescine, spermine or spermidine, at 10-3, 10-4, 10-5 or 10-6M. Putrescine applied prior to anthesis at 10-4M increased fruit set in cv. Dusheri, and spermine applied at full bloom at 10-4M increased fruit set in Langra. Spraying panicles at full bloom generally resulted in higher fruit retention than spray applications prior to anthesis. Spermine was generally more effective than putrescine or spermidine in increasing fruit retention in both cultivars. Spray application of spermine prior to anthesis at 10-3M and of putrescine at full bloom at 10-4M were most effective in increasing the final fruit retention in cultivars Dusheri and Langra, respectively. It is suggested that aliphatic polyamines may play a key role in the fruit set and development of mangoes.
