Abstract : A rapid, simple, cheap and reproducible method has been devised to screen chemicals for their ability to protect mango fruits, particularly those of cv. Kensington Pride, which accounts for 90% of Australian production, against injury from the sapburn. Excellent protection against sapburn was obtained with 100-1000 µl DC-Tron oil/litre compared with similar concentrations of other surfactants or 1% chlorsan or calcium hydroxide. DC-Tron-treated fruits ripened normally with no off-flavours or reduction in quality. Calcium hydroxide left an undesirable white deposit on the fruits and DC-Tron had the disadvantage of leaving the fruits looking slightly dirty. Dipping fruits with stems attached for 15-180 mins in 300 µl DC-Tron/litre, resulted in an increasing fruit blotchiness and off-flavours with increasing dip time. Dipping for longer than 1-2 min was, therefore, not recommended.
